Main Story
Hospital Gains Full Autonomy
The Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Othaya, Nyeri County, has officially been elevated to a national referral facility following a gazette notice issued by President William Ruto. The decision grants the hospital operational independence, allowing it to manage its affairs without oversight from Kenyatta National Hospital, where it previously operated as an annex.
What Level 6 Status Means
Level 6 hospitals sit at the top of Kenya’s healthcare system. With this new status, the facility is expected to handle complex medical cases, advanced surgeries, and specialised treatments that previously required referrals to Nairobi. It also opens doors for enhanced medical research and the training of healthcare professionals.

Leadership and Governance Changes
As part of the transition, the hospital will now operate under a dedicated board of directors tasked with steering its growth and ensuring accountability. This governance shift is expected to improve efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery.
A Win for Regional Healthcare
Residents from Nyeri and neighbouring counties such as Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, and Embu are set to benefit from improved access to high-level medical services closer to home. The move also supports the government’s broader agenda of decentralising essential services and easing congestion at older national referral hospitals.
As Kenya continues to invest in healthcare closer to the people, the rise of Mwai Kibaki Hospital signals a future where quality treatment is no longer defined by distance.
