Following the Senate’s ruling, Mutuse took to social media to share his pride in the outcome.
“I am a proud Kenyan tonight. Thank you to my colleagues in the National Assembly and the Senate for supporting my impeachment charges against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” he posted.
A historic achievement
Mutuse emphasized his belief that the impeachment will serve as a deterrent for current and future leaders, urging them to uphold the constitution and adhere to ethical standards in their roles. “This decision will encourage leaders to check themselves and respect the law while performing their duties,” he stated.
He also reflected on his historic role in Kenyan politics. “I’m proud to be the first MP to table a motion that has successfully impeached a sitting Deputy President,” he added, highlighting the significance of his achievement.
Challenges in the Process
Despite his satisfaction, Mutuse acknowledged the challenges he faced throughout the impeachment process. He praised his fellow lawmakers for their bravery in supporting the motion, noting that it required considerable courage to take such a bold step. “It took bravery and commitment to serve my countrymen. I love Kenya,” he said.
To support his claims, Mutuse presented a comprehensive 100-page document detailing the evidence against Gachagua. This substantial dossier underpinned the debate that ensued in the National Assembly, ultimately leading to the decision to impeach.
A total of 282 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the motion before it was forwarded to the Senate, where it was upheld.
The Senate’s verdict
On October 17, Speaker Amason Kingi announced the Senate’s ruling, confirming Gachagua’s removal from office. “Senators have voted to impeach H.E. Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. He was found guilty on 5 out of 11 charges brought against him by the National Assembly. Consequently, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua ceases to hold office,” Kingi stated.
Gachagua faced a range of serious allegations, including making reckless statements that could threaten national unity, unlawful acquisition of wealth, insubordination, and misuse of office.
Looking ahead
As the political landscape shifts, attention now turns to the National Assembly, which is set to hold a special session on Friday. Speculation mounts that President William Ruto may be preparing to nominate a new Deputy President in the wake of Gachagua’s impeachment, further shaping the future of Kenya’s leadership.
