Main Story
A Fallen Pillar of the Independence Struggle
Kiambati wa Njora, a revered Mau Mau freedom fighter and widely regarded as the last surviving general of the movement, has died. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on Tuesday at his home in Ngorika, Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.

His son, Maina Kiambati, said the veteran succumbed to old age, marking the end of a long life deeply intertwined with Kenya’s fight for self-rule.
Final Arrangements Underway
Family members revealed that Kiambati’s body has been transferred to Umash Funeral Home in Nakuru as burial preparations begin. Relatives said he had been in good spirits in his final days and had recently spent time with his children and grandchildren during a family memorial held over the weekend.
His Role in the Mau Mau Movement
During the struggle against British colonial rule, Kiambati was among the Mau Mau commanders who operated mainly in the Nyandarua region, a key battleground during the liberation war. Alongside 11 other generals, he played a critical role in organising and sustaining armed resistance in the forests.
Over the years, Kiambati became a living reminder of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, often sharing first-hand accounts of life during the struggle.
Voice for Forgotten Veterans
In his later years, Kiambati spoke openly about the difficult conditions faced by many Mau Mau veterans. He repeatedly called on the government and the public to recognise their contribution, highlighting cases where former fighters lived in poverty despite their role in securing Kenya’s independence.
His death now closes a significant chapter in the country’s liberation history making leaders sent their condolonces to the family
As the nation bids farewell to Kiambati wa Njora, his life stands as a powerful reminder that Kenya’s freedom was hard-won and its heroes should never be forgotten.
