Main Story:

Tensions between healthcare workers and county authorities have escalated, with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) ordering the immediate withdrawal of all medical officer interns from Kiambu County.

The union says the ongoing doctors’ strike has created a chaotic and unsafe environment in the county’s health facilities, leaving interns to operate without the necessary supervision, support, or safety guarantees. According to KMPDU, young doctors have been forced to handle emergencies and clinical responsibilities that exceed their level of training.

KMPDU Secretary General Davji Bhimji Atellah condemned the county government for failing to protect and support intern doctors, saying the interns should not be used as a substitute workforce while senior medics are on strike.

“These interns are not sacrificial lambs,” said Atellah. “They are trainees who must work under guidance in a secure, structured environment. Kiambu has failed them.”

The union further warned that if Kiambu County continues to defy this directive, legal action will be taken to protect the interns’ rights and welfare.

The ongoing doctors’ strike, which has paralyzed operations in various public hospitals, has left counties like Kiambu struggling to maintain healthcare services. With senior doctors unavailable, interns and other junior staff have been overwhelmed, leading to mounting concerns over patient safety and clinical accountability.

KMPDU has called for an urgent resolution to the strike and demanded that all counties provide safe, well-supervised conditions for interns before they are allowed back to work.
