Kirk Franklin, a renowned gospel artist, has long been admired for his dedication to spreading God’s message through music. However, his public image faced challenges in recent years after footage of him angrily cursing out his son, Kerrion, surfaced online.
In a recent interview with Cam Newton, Franklin openly talked about the shame he felt after the heated exchange with his son went public. He admitted that he lost control and didn’t handle the situation the way a father should.
“I was very ashamed of myself for the lack of control,” Franklin admitted. “No matter what the conversation was that I felt was a disrespectful conversation, because I’m the father, I have the responsibility. And because I know my son, I have the responsibility to take in totality the environment that I was in, and I didn’t do a good job.” He admitted

The challenges of reconciliation
Franklin went on to discuss the difficulties of reconciling with Kerrion. He emphasized that the road to mending their relationship has not been easy, with both good days and bad days along the way. Despite the challenges, Franklin remains hopeful that his son will recognize the support available to him.
“I am praying that my son will feel and see the support that is there for him to become his best, and the discipline and the work that takes,” he said. “I know that it can be overwhelming for him, but I hope that he will see through it that he’s worth it.”
Navigating Identity Issues
The conversation took a deeper turn as Cam Newton and Kirk Franklin bonded over the pressures their children face, particularly in dealing with trauma and identity issues caused by people’s expectations that they should be just like their fathers.
Newton, a former NFL MVP, posed a significant question about how Franklin has handled Kerrion’s recent revelation that he is bis*xual.
Franklin responded with empathy and unwavering love for his son. He shared that his conversations with Kerrion about love and identity have been consistent since Kerrion was a child.
“I love you, and my love for you is not based on who you love. I love you,” Franklin expressed. “And that is my answer. That’s my answer as a Christian father who believes in the text. I love you, and my love for you does not waver based on who you love.” Franklin said.
Kerrion came out in 2022 during an episode of Bad Boys Club. His friends were asking about his relationship status and sexual preference, to which he offered that he was polyamorous and identified as bis*xual.
This was a surprising revelation, especially since just a year earlier, people had seen footage of Franklin cursing at his son and threatening to break his neck. Many expected that Kirk Franklin, being a Christian, wouldn’t accept this behavior.
However, Franklin’s conversation with Newton revealed his deep commitment to loving his son unconditionally, regardless of his sexual orientation.
