Thousands of Kenyans are converging on Uhuru Park in Nairobi for the Shujaaz Memorial Concert, a tribute to those who lost their lives during recent anti-government protests.
The free concert, nicknamed the ShuGenz Memorial Concert was scheduled for July 7th between noon and 7 pm, symbolically coinciding with the “New Saba Saba” day theme. Saba Saba commemorates the 1990 protests that pushed for multi-party democracy in Kenya.
A lineup of popular Kenyan artists performed, honoring the fallen protesters who died at the hands of police in the past three weeks. These deaths stemmed from demonstrations against the 2024 finance bill, bad governance, and other Kenyan government issues.

Activist Boniface Mwangi, a key organizer of the event, criticized the lack of support from Kenyan churches.
“We approached churches about holding a memorial service,” Mwangi said, “but none were willing, fearing government retaliation. The church should be fearless…”
This statement highlights the tension between the government and those opposed to its policies. The Shujaaz Memorial Concert serves as a platform for Kenyans to mourn the lost lives and express their frustrations.
