Ichung’wah Reveals the origin of His Beef With Gachagua

Published on

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has publicly opened up about his strained relationship with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Ichung’wah explained that the fallout between the two leaders dates back to the Deputy President’s campaign for the “One Man, One Shilling, One Vote” initiative.

According to Ichung’wah, Gachagua had the power and access to top government officials, including the ability to influence policies through the proper channels. Instead, Ichung’wah criticised the Deputy President for taking his concerns to the public and not using his position to push the agenda within the government structures.

We were told it was time for One Man, One Vote, One Shilling, but why use a public platform to air these grievances? The Deputy President could have easily raised these issues within the government and worked on revenue-sharing reforms through cabinet committees and the legislative process,” Ichung’wah said during the interview.

Ichung’wah also questioned why Gachagua has not consistently defended government policies, pointing out that President William Ruto, during his time as Deputy President, would always publicly support the government’s positions, even when it was politically risky.

The Majority Leader revealed that when Gachagua was selected as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) running mate, regional politicians advised him to tone down his abrasive style. “There were concerns about his aggressive and confrontational approach, and many leaders from the region asked him to become more amiable. Unfortunately, his character hasn’t changed, and it has alienated many people,” Ichung’wah remarked.

Ichung’wah and Gachagua have reportedly been at odds, with Gachagua accusing Ichung’wah of undermining efforts to unite the Mt. Kenya region. Meanwhile, Ichung’wah has accused the Deputy President of fuelling tribal politics, which he says has contributed to the rift.
