‘I aspired to be an archaeologist’- Mejja’s narrates his journey from academic dreams to rap stardom (Video)

Published on

Kenyan rapper Mejja’s path to music wasn’t always clear. In a recent interview with Kameme, he revealed how his mother’s illness forced him to alter his life goals.

A Shift in Focus

Mejja originally aspired to be an archaeologist, but his high school plans were disrupted when his mother developed a brain tumor. The year-long struggle to diagnose the condition took a toll on the family. Sadly, his mother’s memory also declined during this difficult time.

This period coincided with the passing of his grandmother, who had been a pillar of support. Mejja also touched upon his upbringing in a Muslim family, where his brothers leaned more towards religion, while he felt less connected.

Overcoming Obstacles

Growing up larger than his peers, Mejja faced bullying that impacted his self-esteem. He lacked the confidence to express himself, even when it came to rapping or approaching girls.

However, high school brought a turning point. While the teasing continued, Mejja gradually developed confidence and learned to stand up for himself.

Finding His Voice

Mejja emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and self-esteem, particularly for young people. He advocates for educational programs that promote self-worth and social interaction. Basketball served as a safe space for Mejja, a place free from bullying where he could thrive.

From Struggles to Success

These challenges ultimately shaped Mejja’s path. Although his academic dreams changed, he found his voice and passion in music. His story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating how obstacles can be overcome and even lead to unexpected success.
