United’s start in Portugal could not have been better as Marcus Rashford was set up by Christian Eriksen, and in the seventh minute, he displayed excellent movement to get into the area and beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa with a low strike into the bottom left corner of the net.
Thirteen minutes later, Eriksen was involved in the second goal as well. He initiated the play in the middle and then found Rashford to set up Rasmus Højlund, who scored his first goal of the season with a thunderous drive inside the near post.
However their captain Bruno Fernandez was once again sent off in the 81st minute for a high boot that caught defender Nehuen Perez as he tried to connect with a cross into the box, this is actually a second time Bruno is getting sent off after initially getting one in their premier league match over the weekend.
Porto bounced right back thanks to the help of Samu Omorodion who capitalized on poor defending to level the score in the 34th minute with a powerful header. He was also involved in the third goal that was ruled off by Manchester United’s defender Harry Maguire who scored a third to level things up.
Erik TenHag’s message
“We started the game very well; we dominated; we scored two good goals, but then we lost control, The middle part was no good, and then we finished very good… We got the equalizer, so it is good for the spirit.”Ten Hag said.
This match highlighted ongoing issues for United under Erik ten Hag. Since his arrival in 2022, no Premier League team has conceded three or more goals as often as United across all competitions.
