Between March and July, the small Kwa Binzaro village in Kilifi County drew renewed attention after intelligence agents tipped off authorities about suspicious activity. Led by DCI homicide head Martin Nyuguto, the team has since combed the area in full forensic gear, excavating suspected shallow graves and securing the scene for further investigation.
So far, investigators have recovered one unidentified male body and two human skulls from thickets near homesteads, raising alarm in surrounding communities. The remains have been moved to Malindi Sub‑County Hospital Mortuary for forensic analysis.
Earlier in July, four individuals—a man who’d been reported missing in Siaya on April 15, his wife, and two women aged 40 and 19—were rescued from a secluded compound rented on a five-acre farm nearby. Preliminary assessments suggest they may have been held under extremist religious teachings .
Authorities suspect that the site may be linked to a resurgence of cult-like activity similar to the Shakahola massacre, where more than 400 followers died after ritual starvation. DCI has already arrested a prime suspect, compound managers, and individuals involved in land transactions; further forensic warrants have been sought for deeper excavation.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that intelligence failures were not a factor and emphasised swift action to prevent additional deaths. The DCI is set to bring in forensic experts next week to advance the investigation .
