Main Story

The courtroom atmosphere was anything but ordinary as one of the suspects in the murder trial of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were reportedly shouted a chilling death threat directed at the lead prosecutor. Security was immediately tightened, with officers moving swiftly to contain the situation.

MP Were was shot dead in Nairobi on the night of April 30 near the City Mortuary roundabout. CCTV footage showed the MP being ambushed and gunned down by assailants on a motorcycle in what appeared to be a well-planned hit. The MP’s bodyguard and driver, who were present at the time, survived the attack.

Several suspects are already in custody. Among them is Philip Nahashon Aroko, a businessman and former political aspirant, who turned himself in but denied any involvement. Also arrested is Ebel Ochieng, a board member of the Lake Basin Development Authority, who is accused of coordinating the murder. Police also detained the MP’s own driver and bodyguard for giving conflicting accounts and possibly facilitating the attack.

DCI detectives believe the killing was part of a broader plot and are now looking into political rivalries and criminal networks. Forensic evidence, including ballistics and phone records, continues to play a major role in the probe. With emotions running high and threats being made in court, the case is now under even tighter watch.

The case will be mentioned on June 17 for further directions.
