CNN journalist Larry Madowo narrowly escapes injury during Nairobi protests

Published on

CNN International correspondent Larry Madowo had a harrowing experience while covering the recent protests in Nairobi. While reporting live from the city’s central business district, Madowo and his crew came under direct fire from anti-riot police.

A video shared on social media captured the terrifying moment when Madowo was struck by a projectile. The journalist, visibly startled, could be heard shouting as he instinctively shielded himself. This happened twice during the live broadcast.

Madowo later revealed that he and his team were intentionally targeted by the police. “Kenyan police targeted me directly today. I was hit by a fragment after officers aimed at me and my CNN team,” he wrote on social media.

The video footage clearly shows the police aiming directly at Madowo and his crew, despite their clear identification as journalists. The officers continued firing even as Madowo protested their actions.

Madowo also highlighted the increased aggression of the police compared to previous protests, stating that they were determined to disperse any gathering of protesters.

In a similar incident, Citizen TV journalist Stephen Letoo also faced danger during the protests. A video showing police firing tear gas directly at journalists has sparked outrage. Letoo expressed his shock and anger at the police’s actions.

The attacks on journalists have raised concerns about press freedom and the safety of media professionals in Kenya. Watch his video below;
