Main Story:
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially opened the bidding process for Chinese construction firms to undertake the expansion of a critical urban and peri-urban road corridor connecting Nairobi and Kiambu County.
The road section, stretching from Pangani through Muthaiga, Kiambu town, and up to Ndumberi, is earmarked for significant upgrades aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving commuter experience, and enhancing logistics for businesses operating in and around Nairobi.

This major infrastructure push is supported by China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, which has committed to funding the project under a bilateral cooperation deal. The agreement signals continued collaboration between Kenya and China in the development of key infrastructure.
By inviting Chinese contractors directly, KeNHA is moving swiftly to fulfill terms tied to the financing arrangement, a model commonly used in other large-scale projects across Africa
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between Nairobi and Kiambu. It will also enhance access for residential, commercial, and agricultural communities along the corridor.
The expansion is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize urban transport networks and support decongestion in Nairobi.
