Main Story

On July 23, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed its intent to formally intervene in the genocide case against Israel at the ICJ. Initiated by South Africa in December 2023, the case accuses Israel of systematically targeting civilians in Gaza in violation of the Genocide Convention.

Brazil cited the use of starvation as a weapon of war, repeated attacks on civilians, and the bombing of UN and religious sites in Gaza as actions that could amount to genocidal acts. The foreign ministry described these as “grave breaches of international humanitarian law” and said Brazil would submit written arguments to the court.

While countries such as Spain, Colombia, and Turkey have also expressed intentions to support South Africa’s claim, major powers like the United States, Germany, and the UK have strongly rejected the allegations, standing firmly behind Israel and dismissing the case as politically driven.

South Africa’s case has thrust the Gaza crisis into an international legal spotlight. In January 2024, the ICJ issued provisional measures ordering Israel to prevent acts of genocide and allow the flow of humanitarian aid. Brazil’s support may further legitimize the case and strengthen pressure on Israel at the diplomatic level.
