Hungary’s medical community is celebrating a significant breakthrough in breast cancer detection thanks to an advanced AI model.

This new technology, computer-assisted detection, promises to identify breast cancer up to four years before it develops.

Developed by a team at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the AI model has shown remarkable accuracy in spotting potential cancerous changes. The study, which utilized data from over 90,000 mammograms at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), revealed that the AI could detect subtle changes in breast tissue that are invisible to the human eye.

Additionally, the AI model identifies minute patterns and anomalies in mammograms, enabling earlier intervention and potentially saving lives.

The deep-learning model was trained on mammogram data and outcomes from over 60,000 patients. According to MIT’s researchers, it can pinpoint precursors to malignant tumours and predict with high accuracy whether a patient is likely to develop breast cancer in the future.

“This technology represents a huge leap forward in preventive care,” stated Dr. László Szabo, a Hungarian oncologist. He further added that this discovery will be revolutionary in that it will help in catching potential health issues years before they become serious, hence patients can be offered more effective treatment options and improve overall survival rates.

The introduction of this AI model marks a promising advancement in the fight against breast cancer, potentially changing the landscape of early detection and treatment.
