Main Story

Although the National Police Service Level IV Hospital at Mbagathi was completed in the 2022/2023 financial year, it has remained unused, raising concerns about stalled public investments. The state-of-the-art facility was built under the Kenya Defence Forces’ supervision and handed over to the NPS in 2024. However, challenges including incomplete payments to contractors have delayed its official launch.

CS Aden Duale recently met with key stakeholders including Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Deputy IG Gilbert Masengeli to deliberate on the hospital’s official opening. Also present were Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga and officials from the Digital Health Agency. The meeting focused on addressing the remaining financial obligations and finalising a model for managing the facility.

Once operational, the hospital will be a game-changer for more than 100,000 police officers and their families. It features 150 beds, a minor operating theatre, intensive care and high-dependency units, as well as renal and radiology departments. It is also equipped with a mental health and counselling centre, aiming to improve the well-being of officers exposed to high-stress environments.

The facility is expected to align with the government’s broader health agenda, particularly Universal Health Coverage (UHC). By offering affordable, accessible care to frontline security personnel and their families, the hospital could also ease pressure on other public health facilities.
